Gambling Rehabitation


Gambling issues have a significant impact on the lives of many Vietnamese people in South Australia. There are an increasing number of Vietnamese with gambling problems, creating negative impacts on individuals, families and society. To alleviate and prevent issues created by gambling, VNCASA provides a Rehabilitation service to Vietnamese people in South Australia who have problems with gambling.

Aim

The Vietnamese Gambling Rehabilitation program provides culturally appropriate services for problem gamblers, relatives, family members, friends or others who are affected by a gambling addiction.

Objectives

  • Increase community awareness about the impacts of harmful practice of gambling on society and individuals.
  • Provide liaison, referral, advice and client advocacy for Vietnamese gamblers to mainstream gambler rehabilitation and other appropriate services.
  • Provide direct services to Vietnamese people who have gambling problems and are seeking help.
  • Provide direct services to Vietnamese people immediately affected by family members who are addicted to gambling.
  • Provide counselling services to Vietnamese (including co-work or purchasing services from other gambler rehabilitation services) such as financial, therapeutic and family counselling services to meet the needs of gamblers and their families.

Provided services

The program provides emotional support and counselling for Vietnamese people who are experiencing difficulties and hardship affecting their lives because of addiction to gambling. The following practical supports are provided:

  • Financial counselling to help people manage their budgets. Financial hardship being one of the direct consequences of problem gambling can be minimised with some basic budget planning.
  • Assistance to find secure and affordable accommodation through the South Australia housing trust, private rental or other community housing services.
  • Referral services to employment agencies or training bodies to help acquire and enhance skills necessary to gain employment.
  • Help to address health related issues, which are identified as one of the many consequences of problem gambling. Clients may be referred to appropriate health services if needed.
  • Assistance with legal issues by referring gamblers to appropriate community legal services or acting as a support person for gamblers when they have to go to court.
  • Close work with Centrelink to help gamblers obtain financial assistance and other available Centrelink services.

Other community educational programs

  • Development and implementation of different group workshops and forums to raise the awareness in the Vietnamese community about the impacts of gambling on individuals, families and society.
  • Launching of radio programs, writing of articles for the local Vietnamese newspaper to address gambling issues in the community.

Target group

All Vietnamese people who are living in the Adelaide Metropolitain area.
