Aim
The program objective is to facilitate access to English language courses for Vietnamese people, thus allowing them to improve their English language skills. The emphasis is on writing, numeracy, and vocal communication skills such as reading. The program caters for various levels from basic to advanced.
Objectives
- To improve participants’ language and independent skills to prepare them for further study, or for employment and volunteering work.
- To increase knowledge and awareness of Australian systems such as the legal system, traffic rules, child protection, police roles, health information, social and welfare services, nutrition issues etc...
- To increase social and living skills through group activities such as cooking, communication and parenting; to reduce social isolation; to improve conflict resolution skills.
- To increase opportunities for further vocational training and employment opportunities.
- To enhance participants’ self estem and self confidence.
Target group
The program is designed to cater for general interest, social, personal growth and pre-employment skills of Vietnamese Australians who are unemployed, mature aged people or for women who have issues with social isolation.
Structure of the English classes
The program recognises the special needs of Vietnamese people with limited language skills and living in social isolation. Various teaching methods will be employed in different learning environments that best suit the needs of the participants.
Classes are held in various Community Centres. Currently, there are three basic learning groups provided for women, and one advanced mix genders learning group.
The program not only includes English lessons, but also offers other general information pertaining to legal and educational systems, health, parenting skills, home improvement, and other social issues. Prior to each session, English teachers often provide participants with the vocabularies required for the class topics. Often English guest speakers are invited to deliver general information.

She has co-coordinated programs for students with hearing impairments and who have English as a second language at Adelaide High School and at Pembroke School. |
